LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – Cold and allergy sufferers have won a round in Frankfort. A bill that would have required a prescription for many cold remedies is all but dead. The pseudoephedrine in over the counter cold and allergy pills is also the main ingredient in methamphetamine, a dangerous illegal drug. Some lawmakers and police officers said making pseudoephedrine a prescription-only drug would drastically cut the number of meth labs in Kentucky.
Two other states have made the drug by prescription only and have seen a huge drop in the number of meth labs. However, on Tuesday Linda Belcher, the state representative who sponsored the bill, told WHAS11 News there are not enough votes in the Senate to pass the bill, and because of that it's unlikely the bill will be brought to the floor of the House.
