LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- He was a beloved police officer who served in Louisville, La Grange and most recently in Oldham County.

Officer David Howley died of a heart attack on May 14 a few hours after responding to an emergency run. On Monday, May 19, there was an outpouring of support for the 20-year veteran who also had political aspirations.

“It's quite a tribute to a man who wore dark blue to have so many friends come in here that love him,” Greg Allen, pastor of Southeast Christian Church’s Oldham County campus, said.

Howley was running for Oldham County Judge Executive. His name will still appear on the ballot for Tuesday's primary but the votes won't count.

Howley's funeral was on Monday at Southeast Christian Church's Oldham Campus.

“The community is coming out in numbers because we all loved David and I think that’s quite a tribute to a public servant,” Allen said.

Those who knew Howley said his family and life were full of love and humor.
