LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11)-- When weather forces many schools and businesses to close, you can count on one service to always answer the phone. It's your local pizza place.

"I've been on the phone for almost two hours straight just taking orders," George Timmering, the owner of the Bearno’s by the Bridge said.

Timmering came to work prepared Friday morning. He knew the area's first bout of winter weather would put his staff on overdrive in and out of the kitchen.

"Even with losing the dining room, we're still up about 30 percent from a normal day. It's a welcome boost," Timmering said.

The larger demand creates twice the work and hassle for delivery guys like Brian Smith. The last ice storm in Louisville sent Smith delivering to 53 locations in one day, a record he hopes he never breaks.

"On days like today, people are generally nice if you’re late because of weather conditions," Smith said.

"Safety is obviously a big concern. I don't want drivers to feel uncomfortable. I have an SUV, a lot of our partners have SUVs. We want to be safe and we also want to be dependable. We want to know, no matter what's going on with weather you can depend on your Bearno's pizza," Timmering said.

Timmering says his pizza place makes an additional 50 to 100 pizzas on snow days, generally with the same number of staff as a usual work day.
