SHELBY COUNTY, Ind. (WHAS11) – Indiana Conservation Officers were kept busy during the weekend responding to numerous floodwater rescues.
One of the unexpected was a 500 black bear stranded in its cage in Shelby County.
Someone called and asked them to check on the welfare of the bear that was left behind when its owner was forced to evacuate his home because of flooding.
Officers discovered the bear in about 4 feet of water.
Officers were able to create an elevated platform to help the bear escape the water.
Water levels did recede while officers were on the scene.
The owner of the bear does have the required permit.
