(WHAS11) – A federal agency has given an Arizona man the go ahead to market a new form of alcohol – powdered booze.

The product transforms a shot of vodka or rum into a pouch of powder.

Inventor Mike Phillips calls it “Palcohol” – the same agency who gave him the go ahead on this product that claims to have up to 60 percent alcohol by volume.

9 years sober, Vera Martz says she now helps others battle their alcohol and drug addictions. She believes Palcohol is a disaster waiting to happen.

"Oh I can't believe anybody would even think about letting this come on the market, I mean that's about as stupid as it gets," she said.

Palcohol could hit store shelves by the fall.

The maker says it will be available in powdered vodka, rum and four different cocktail flavors.

The maker of Palcohol says there’s a discrepancy over how much powder is in the packets and they will resubmit the product for approval.
