LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The University of Louisville and Simmons College of Kentucky teamed up to remind the community that “Education is King.”

The event held at St. Stephen Church was held in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday with a purpose to encourage more African-Americans to seek college degrees.

Next month, Simmons College will become a nationally accredited institution which means more opportunities for the school to provide financial aid.

“Through education, you discover your undiscovered self. You discover what your gifts are which has a great impact on the quality of life that you will have,” Dr. Kevin Cosby said.

University of Louisville president James Ramsey and Mayor Greg Fischer and WHAS11’s Renee Murphy were also on hand to speak at the event.
