(WHAS11)-On Thursday afternoon at Saint Vincent De Paul, Makenzie Smith of Borden, Indiana was on hand to watch 1,000 coats be distributed to the poor and homeless.

For the past three years, Makenzie has been asking family, friends and the community to help with her donation.

When I see the people look through the coats, it makes me happy because they're finally getting something to put on their back. Says Makenzie Smith

Makenzie says she got the inspiration to start the coat drive from her second grade teacher.  It began as class project learning about the homeless.

She says it brings her joy to help people stay warm in the winter.
