FLOYD CO., Ind. (WHAS11) -- A clubhouse deck collapsed in Floyd Co. sending seven people to the hospital Sunday evening.
It happened in the Wolf Lake Boulevard subdivision just before 4 p.m.
The evening began with a family get together and ended with photos on the deck of the neighborhood clubhouse. That's when the floor collapsed beneath about two dozen people standing above.
The New Chapel Fire Department responded to the scene.
"There were multiple people laying on the ground where the deck had collapsed," Fire Chief Jamey Noel said.
Noel says the seven people were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries, some sprains and broken bones.
He's boggled by a collapse of a deck as new as this one, built with enough space to fit more than the 24 last standing on it.
"It's tough to say, the main support portion of the deck, while I'm not an engineer, is intact. It looks mostly like the decking, the center decking is what collapsed, which is a trek style decking, a new material for decking in the last few years," Noel said.
While authorities look for a cause, the clubhouse remains roped off to visitors.
"It's a tragedy this happened right before Christmas, so I'm just glad there was no loss of life," Noel said.
