CARROLLTON -- A trial two years in the making is underway in Denton County.

John Howard is accused of shelling out more than $100,000 trying get his wife of 30 years killed. Prosecutors say he spent years plotting out her attempted murder and looking for a hit man to hire.

On Aug. 18, 2012, Nancy Howard was shot in the face outside their Carrollton home. She lost one of her eyes in what she initially thought was a robbery.

It left her in a coma for days.

The first police officers on the scene that day testified Wednesday about what they saw when they showed up. All say they heard Nancy shouting, "Help me! Help me! Help me, Jesus!"

The jury was shown several photos from the crime scene and evidence gathered from Frank Howard's accounting office. He admitted to having an affair and spending a lot of money on his mistress.

Howard seemed in good spirits Wednesday. Nancy Howard sat in the courtroom surrounded by friends and family. She told News 8 that re-living that awful day is extremely difficult, but she's relying on prayer to get her through it.
