KATY, Texas -- A family is grateful that their toddler was not hurt after a creepy break-in that happened while everyone was sound asleep.
It happened back on April 5 around 5 a.m. in the 18200 block of Flint Hill Drive in Katy.
The burglar slipped into the family’s home through an unlocked first-story window.
He appeared to be aware that surveillance cameras were recording his every move but carried on anyway.
The footage shows him going from room to room. For five minutes, the stranger is seen walking in and out of the bedroom of a 2-year-old boy.
At one point, the intruder hovers over the boy’s crib and points a flashlight toward the sleeping child.
“I was infuriated when I saw him walking back and forth in my baby’s room. My stomach was turning,” explained father Thinh Le. “He’s my world. I love him.”
Thinh Le and the child’s mother were in their bedroom on the first floor. They slept through everything.
The parents are still baffled as to why the criminal was drawn to the child’s room upstairs.
“My boy thought it was me so he went back to sleep. If he made noise or cried and I went upstairs, something else could happen,” said Le.
The teenage burglar eventually left and burglarized another home in the Brenwood Park subdivision.
He also got into that home through an unlocked window.
“I was sleeping. My dog started barking at the top of the stairs,” said Crystal Cox. “My boyfriend thought his bark sounded different so he flipped the light on.”
Cox’s boyfriend then shined a laser pointer toward downstairs. The intruder quickly escaped but abandoned some stolen belongings on Cox’s front lawn.
“My purse, my sister’s purse, my laptop bag and our neighbor’s laptop bag,” said Cox.
That second laptop bag belonged to Thinh Le. The suspect also stole $60 from his wallet.
His laptop was inside and so was his contact information. That’s how Cox got in touch with Le, and the two began piecing everything together.
Cox was floored when she saw Le’s surveillance video.
“He had no problem being in someone’s house, knowing that they were home sleep. That takes a lot of nerve,” added Cox.
Neighbors suspect this same intruder is responsible for a string of other burglaries in the community.
The suspect is described as a male, 16 to 18 years old. He was wearing a New Era baseball cap with a San Antonio Spurs logo on the brim. He also has a tattoo behind his right ear, possibly of Asian characters.
If you recognize him or have any information, you’re asked to call Crime Stoppers at (713) 222-TIPS.
