KATY, Texas — Harris County authorities are investigating an after-school brawl that left one high school student hospitalized with a gunshot wound.
Officials say dozens of students were involved in the melee Friday after classes at Cypress Lakes High School.
Harris County Sheriff's Sgt. Richard Newby tells the Houston Chronicle it appears the wounded student was targeted and the fight may be connected to gang activity.
Neighbors say about 50 to 60 high school students were involved and most scattered after several gunshots rang out and the student was wounded. Many agreed the fights have become too common.
"Cause this is right next to the school," Jacob Bowers said. "So, pretty much as soon as their off school property, they feel like they can come out here and get it on, but the neighbors and everybody, they're getting sick of it."
No one has been arrested and the pistol used in the gunfire hasn't been recovered.
The victim is expected to survive.
