HOUSTON –- Police used their tech tools to track down a carjacked pickup truck late Thursday after the owner left his iPhone in the vehicle.

Unfortunately the suspect still managed to get away, police said.

Officers with the Houston Police Department said it was around 11:30 a.m. a carjacking victim called 911 to say his pickup had been taken at gunpoint on Tidwell Road near Jensen Drive. The victim told dispatchers his iPhone was still in the vehicle, and police managed to get a signal to track it down.

They eventually found the stolen truck stopped on Autumn Lane near Weaver Road on the northeast side of town, but the suspect was nowhere to be seen.

A perimeter was established, and despite a search by ground and air, the suspect or suspects were never located. Police said they may have used a getaway vehicle.

Police said the passenger side of the truck had several bullet holes and a rear window was broken out, but it wasn’t immediately clear where the gunshots came from.
