WEST LIBERTY, Ky. (AP) -- Two men are recovering after a small plane crashed as it tried to take off at an airport in eastern Kentucky.
West Liberty Fire Chief Brian Scalf told WKYT-TV (http://bit.ly/MGLrwP) that the men suffered minor injuries. Scalf said the men heard a strange noise from the engine, like it was stalling, and decided to abort the takeoff. The problem was there wasn't enough room on the runway to stop. He says the plane went off the runway, down a hill and crashed into a ditch.
Dwayne Nickell, a firefighter who lives nearby and saw it happen, says the plane "skidded right off the tarmac, and right off of the grass run." He says he went over to help until the men were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
