LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – The Louisville Metro Police Department is investigating an armed robbery that injured two people in the 500 block of E. Liberty Street Monday.

Police say both the suspect, a male, and the victim were armed and shot each other. We’re told the victim is a University of Louisville employee, in the IT department.

"The victim was walking down the street when he was accosted by a black male. Shots were fired by both individuals," Dwight Mitchell, an LMPD spokesman, said.

It happened in the Liberty Green apartment complex, which sits directly next to UofL’s Health and Science campus. It’s the same complex that’s been hit with armed robberies not once but four times this month.

UofL sent an email to students and staff last week  after a series of robberies occurred, click here to read that email.

It's put many students who live nearby on edge, as the suspect in each of these cases may still be waking the same streets.

Jimmy Rhine was working inside St. Boniface church when he says he heard five shots ring out across the street.

"Bam, bam, bam! It sounded like a gunshot, substantially loud," Rhine said. "He [the victim] was still standing up and he fell against the door for a minute and said, 'I've been shot!'" Rhine said.

The male victim and suspect were taken to University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police said they’ve worked with UofL in the last few weeks to increase security in the area, but students we spoke to say they don’t feel any safer.

Investigators have not made any connection between today’s robbery and the three others.

"If they are connected, it'll be good to get this guy off the streets. Good for the community,” Mitchell said.
