LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- A shooting in West Louisville at the 3600 block of Southern Avenue near Russell Lee Park has left a 19-year-old dead.

Police said Oladreon Whitfield was shot while riding in a car with friends. Police have not said whether Whitfield was the intended target. They have said a fight broke out before the shooting happened.

“We aren't sure the motive or reasoning at this point. We are still sorting through some of the interviews and putting that together, “Lt. Barry Wilkerson, LMPD Homicide Unit, said.

According to Police, Whitfield was arrested for drug charges and reckless driving and released from Metro Corrections on Thrusday around 2 p.m., just hours before the shooting.
Around 9:00 p.m., someone drove Whitfield to Norton Hospital. Police said officers caught up with the car in time to escort them safely. After arriving at Norton, Whitfield was transported to University Hospital where he died.

The coroner said Whitfield died of a gunshot wound to the head. Detectives said they questioned everyone in the car, but still no arrest.

Neighbors told WHAS11 they heard more than a dozen gunshots last night. “I looked out the window and everybody was screaming and running away from the park,” Gleenisha said.

Debra Purnell lives across the street for where the shooting happened she said Thrusday has left her feeling uneasy.

“My grandkids is on the porch and if they got shot bullets don't have no eyes,” Purnell said.

Whitfield was known to his friends as “O.” The teen went to Doss High School. Those who knew him said he was usually quiet.

“I never thought that it would be him getting shot, because he was quiet. He didn’t do nothing to nobody. It was just shocking,” one former classmate said.

LMPD is continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call 574-LMPD.
