LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) – A 13-year-old swimmer is lucky to be alive thanks to a lifeguard and a nurse in Louisville.
Officials with the downtown branch of the YMCA says they boy lost consciousness while swimming in the pool.
The lifeguard and nurse on duty were able to resuscitate the boy in about 20 seconds.
Steve Tarver, CEO of the Greater Louisville YMCA, says the boy appeared to be doing fine when paramedics took him to the hospital.
“This is something that we unfortunately train for. At this point and time, it appears that the child was awake, alert and responsive when he left the building and EMS obviously does a great job, they got here very quickly and we will continue to monitor his progress," he said.
Tarver was unsure if this was the first time the lifeguard had experience with a near drowning.
