WHEELWRIGHT, Ky. (AP) -- A dozen families are homeless after a landslide in eastern Kentucky that officials say may get worse and destroy more houses.
City officials in Wheelwright told WYMT-TV that water in a mine abandoned 40 years ago appears to be causing the slide, but federal inspectors are expected to evaluate the area on Tuesday. Mayor David Sammons says officials don't know how much water is causing the slippage.
A dozen families in the coal mining town saw their land start to slip Saturday, with officials putting estimates on the slippage at four feet since the weekend.
Wheelwright resident Brenda Mullins says the ground was falling away from her home.
The Wheelwright Baptist Center is opening a shelter and providing food for the families.
