App of the Week: Leafsnap

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) -- Spring begins this week, and with it the trees will be in bloom. This week’s App of the Week will help you know what is blooming around you.

The Leafsnap app is an electronic field guide that helps users identify the trees and plants around them.

The app, designed by researchers from Columbia University, the University of Maryland and the Smithsonian Institution, uses visual recognition software to identify the species of plant based on its leaves.

To identify what you’re looking at, grab a leaf, put it against a plain background and snap a photo of it. The app will match the leaf to leaves in its database to find the right species.

The Leafsnap app also contains high-resolution images of flowers, fruits, seeds and barks of different plants, so you can look through the image library to familiarize yourself with the plants you see every day.

So, if you want to get a better idea of the plant life blooming around you this spring, check out the Leafsnap app today.

The Leafsnap app is available on iOS devices.
