HENRY Co. KY,(WHAS11)-- The Kentucky State Police is investigating a deadly crash on Wednesday morning at the 30-mile marker in Henry Co. Two others, including a KSP trooper, were injured.

KSP said two commercial vehicles are involved in the crash that happened before 7:30 a.m. KSP said Trooper Mickey Gonterman was responding to a call of dogs in the road on I-71. The caller and Gonterman were walking on the right-hand shoulder of a bridge when a vehicle, that had moved to the left lane, rapidly decelerated. That is when a tractor-trailer and box truck moved from the left to the right lane to avoid contact with the passenger vehicle. The tractor-trailer then hit the box truck in the rear causing the box truck to "jack-knife" across both lanes of traffic and overturned on the bridge.

The caller and Gonterman were hit by the trailer of the box truck, KSP said. The caller was pinned and was pronounced dead at the scene. Gonterman fell 30 feet from the bridge. He was flown out for medical attention and is in critical condition at the University of Louisville Hospital.

During a press conference, KSP said that Gonterman had come out of surgery. He has been upgraded from critical to stable condition. He is expected to recover, but the recovery process will be long.

The driver of the box truck was transported to Baptist Health Hospital in LaGrange for non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators with Kentucky State Police Post 5 will continue the ongoing investigation. Kentucky State Police Post 5 was assisted on scene by KSP’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), Campbellsburg Fire Department, Lake Jericho Fire Department, Henry County Animal Control, Henry County EMS, Henry County Coroner, and the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.
