07:46 PM EDT on Wednesday, July 23, 2008
(WHAS11) - It's the first step in developing another new vaccine against a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cancer.
Today, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center announced that it's licensed the technology for a second-generation vaccine against the Human Papilloma Virus to Louisville-based Advanced Cancer Therapeutics.
The vaccine, produced using tobacco plants targets the HPV L-2 protein.
It may provide broader protection against a greater number of HPV strains and at a lower cost than the current vaccine that targets the HPV-1 protein.
