Tips for the Groom - Choosing your team

The Best Man

  • Custom dictates choosing your brother or best friend for the job. However, you can give the honor to your father. In addition to making sure everything runs smoothly, the best man's responsibilities include:
    • Planning the bachelor party.
    • Helping you get ready on the day of the wedding.
    • Standing up at the ceremony.
    • Serving as a witness and signing the marriage license.
    • Delivering the first toast during the reception.
    • Making sure the groom's tux is returned the day after the wedding.
  • Other duties might include
    • Picking up out of town guests.
    • Packing your luggage in the car and filling the car with gas.
    • Making sure all groomsmen's tuxes are returned the day after the wedding.

The Groomsmen

  • Brothers, fiancee's brothers or any close friends can serve as groomsmen. Usually you choose between one and three groomsmen. Thier responsibilities include:
    • Co-hosting the bachelor party.
    • Standing by the altar during the ceremony.
    • Escorting the bridesmaids.
    • Attending the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.

The Ushers

  • Friends or relatives can serve as ushers. You'll want at least one usher for every 50 guests. Ushers are responsible for:
    • Escorting people to their seats: Groom's guests sit on the right and the Bride's on the left.
    • Helping out-of-town guests get to the ceremony.
    • Offering assistance as needed to the florist, photographers, videographers, etc.

The Ringbearer

  • A younger brother, relative or friend who is between three and eight years old can be a perfect addition to your wedding party.
    • He walks in the processional and carries a ring sewn onto a small white pillow (this is not necessarily the actual wedding ring).
    • If very young, he can stand with his parents during the processional and later be included in the formal wedding photographs.
