Check out this pepper, how many times have you reached for produce only to find that it was completely spoiled? Talk about a waste of money! This morning's news segment (check it out below) was all about preserving food. I posted the picture of our pepper on Facebook last week and loads of fans posted their own tips, I thought I would share those with you today.

1. I found these green "food preserver" bags at the Dollar Tree - some for fruits/veggies and some for bread - they worked like a charm!! AND inexpensive. -Amy

2. If I'm going to use it in food I will cut it like I need it and freeze it. -Alexandria

3. Peppers can be sliced or chopped and then frozen to used later in stir fries or sautéed. I buy a bunch at the orchard stands and chop away for the whole winter's use. Tip: store in small Ziploc then place all the bags in a gallon Ziploc to prevent odors in the freezer. -Lisa

4. I chop and freeze a lot of veggies. Aluminum foil helps preserve them too. If you label the foil after you wrap it, you'll know what it is at a glance. -Jennifer

5. I wrap cilantro in paper towels to absorb the wetness...the cilantro will last longer in the veggie bin and wont turn black as fast. -Yvonne

6. If you trim and wash celery when you first bring it home, then wrap in tinfoil it will last a long time without getting rubbery. Also do not store tomatoes near your vegetables because they give off an enzyme that ripen the vegetables too quickly. -April

7. I will buy bulk romaine lettuce at Sam's and tightly wrap each in plastic wrap. It will last about a month. - Britt

8. We wash our fruits and veggies in a vinegar wash. (No smell or taste lingers after it dries, promise!) We mix up a 1/10 solution of vinegar to water. Vinegar is an antimicrobial/antifungal solution that is food safe :-) It kills the bacteria and mold/fungus spores that the fruit/veggie might have on it. I put the fruit and veggies into the solution and let them sit for 10 minutes, then rinse them off well and dry. :-) I've had things last 2-3 times as long as they normally do! Plus, its a cheap since vinegar is so inexpensive. -Carrie

9. I wrap my bananas with cellophane (just where they join together) and it keeps them fresh for at least twice as long...-Angela

10. If you like fresh ginger, freeze it and just grate a bit when you need it and keep the rest frozen ... it will keep for a looooonnnng time (a year).-Joanne

Personally, I buy much of my produce from Aldi and I have found that I have to wash it and bag it appropriately to make sure it doesn't spoil.
