With the rise in social media coupons, concerns about sharing personal information have grown as well. In every single workshop I teach, someone tells me how they wish they could print coupons from facebook but they don't want to give out personal information. I actually had one woman come up and tell me that I should stop posting facebook coupons...well, I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon.
Here's the deal, when you 'like' a company on facebook and sign up or click to print their coupon, you will usually see another page pull up that says 'click to allow access'. This means, you are giving permission to that company to send you e-mails, post on your wall and so forth. Personally, I have 'liked' several hundred companies and have never had any issues with this however, I know there are many of you who are concerned so I wanted to post an alternative.
Create a non-personal facebook account.
Yep, it's that simple. All you have to do is log out of your real account (or not if you don't have one at all) then, visit http://www.facebook.com and register as a new user. You may pick any name you want (it does not have to be your real name) then you can upload any picture you want as well, if you want to at all.
The only thing you do have to have is a real e-mail address. If you've heard me teach before, then you have heard me say to make a coupon e-mail address that is not your personal account. This means, set up another e-mail address just for coupons. That is the address you can also use to set up your facebook account. That's it. That is all the info you need.
Now, if you are logged into this account, when you 'like' a company and allow the access, you will not be giving them access to anything personal other than your coupon e-mail address.
Now, granted, if they are mailing you a coupon you will have to provide a mailing address but that is normal. Facebook is so easy for companies to use and easy for their deals to be spread around the country so, it's likely we'll continue to see an increase in social media coupons.
