Eyelid Surgery
(Medically referred to as Blepharoplasty)

1. Who is a good candidate for cosmetic eyelid surgery?

A good candidate for eyelid surgery would include anyone wishing to improve the appearance of their upper and/or lower eyelids due to heredity or as part of the natural aging process. Some examples that you would benefit from surgery are:

  • Excess skin that creates a fold over the natural curve of the upper eyelid
  • Sagging skin hanging from the upper eyelid, which can impair vision
  • An appearance of puffiness in the upper eyelid
  • Bags under the eyes
  • Droopiness and/or excess skin of the lower eyelid

2. How is the surgery performed?

In a typical procedure, your surgeon will make an incision in the creases of your upper lids and just below the lashes in the lower lids.  Through the incisions, your surgeon removes excess skin and fatty tissue.  The incisions are then closed with very fine sutures to minimize scars.

3.  How should I prepare for surgery?

You should avoid Asprin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs before surgery, as they can cause increased bleeding. Also, if you are a smoker, you will be asked to stop well before your scheduled surgery. While cosmetic eyelid surgery is usually performed as an out-patient procedure, you will still need to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery.

4.  What should I expect post-op?

Following the procedure, you may experience blurred vision as a result of swelling and from the ointment used to soothe and protect your eyes during surgery.  Your eyes may feel tight and sore as your anesthesia wears off, but your surgeon will prescribe pain medication to control any discomfort.  You will be asked to keep your head elevated for several days and to use cold compresses to minimize swelling and bruising.  The stitches will be removed after two days and you will gradually start to feel better although you may be sensitive to sunlight, wind, and other irritants for a few weeks and should wear dark tinted sunglasses to reduce your exposure.  You will be able to wear makeup within the week following your surgery and resume most normal activities within 7 – 10 days.
