LG&E proposing rate drop in electrical heat, but increase in gas heat

05:48 PM EST on Tuesday, January 13, 2009

WHAS11 coverage

Have you noticed an increase in your heating bill?

LG&E could temporarily raise rates next year without state approval

LG&E, KU reach settlement...

(WHAS11) - Those with gas heat will see an increase if a proposed new rate agreement is approved, while those who rely on electrical heat will see their bills drop.

Watch this story

It's the result of a negotiation that's been months in the making and might not be too hard on most people's budgets.

Rising power bills are often thought of as up there with death and taxes, when it comes to things you can't do much about.  But Attorney General Jack Conway announced today that EON has agreed to much lower rate increases than the company had originally proposed.

LG&E rate increase

Have you noticed an increase in your heating bill?

Yes, I have noticed an increase in my heating bill

No, I have not noticed an increase in my heating bill

Not sure

The attorney general negotiates power rates on behalf of customers.

The proposed agreement released today would actually drop the average residential customer's electric bill about a dollar a month.  Natural gas service will cost more though.

Investments in new infrastructure will allow LG&E to recover about $22-million dollars.  That means about a 5-dollar-a-month increase for each average residential customer.

While EON officials aren't completely happy with the agreement, it may be the best they can hope for right now.  The public service commission still has to approve the settlement.  The board will reconvene on Thursday.

If the rate changes are approved, they could go into effect by February 6th.  Kentucky already has the third lowest electric rate in the country before the proposed reduction.

Have you noticed an increase in your heating bill?

yes my bill went down, new furnace and insulation work wonders.

Do you really think LGE cares about the people in louisville ky, yes they do as long as they can gouge and take your last penny. My bill doubled from dec to jan. Maybe if some of the bigwigs lost one of thier family members to the cold they
would look at it differently, I doubt it. Someday they will answer to a higher power. Without the customers you have no job think about it

My bill dOuBlEd!!! Funny thing is my heat was set higher when the bill was just $120, its been a FRIGID 61 degrees in my house the past month and the bill is $244, with $210 of that being just the gas. I am 8 months pregnant and my husband is in Iraq worried about me & our income. It is absolutely outrageous. Im hoping my power just stays off in this ice storm so I can save a couple dollars. Shame on LG&E

Does anyone know of a concerted effort to address this increase with the Attorney General ??

That 22 million that they want to try to get back from the wind storm should not be a reason to raise our prices. That is the cost of doing buisness. Stop stealing from the people we are tired of it and we will fight back....

I recieved my LG&E bill for the month of December and it doubled from November. Who can afford this every month?

The cost of my heating bill is going to force me to choose between food and heat for my family. I am a single parent of a 4 year old and 15 year old male children. Do we eat or stay warm?

i actually used less electricity this month than I did last year at this same time and I paid WAY more! AND I AM FREEZING IN MY OWN HOME!!!! I have unplugged everything I can, switched out all incandescent bulbs, replaced appliances with high energy savers, replaced windows and it makes no difference. It is ridiculous that LG&E and EON are thinking of dropping our electric bills by one dollar a month. Are they kidding or what??!! We should get excited about a whopping $12.00 saving a year!!Then they want to take that away by raising our gas by five dollars. (As if gas isn't high enough already.) That just added another 60.00 a year to our exorbitant rates. If they are so hard pressed to recoup $22 million, let their executives and corporate fat cats take a pay cut like the rest of us.

My LG&E bills have increased so much that it takes more than a week pay just to pay the bill and I keep my heat so low that I freeze and fear my pipes might freeze.

Past two months my bill has doubled.. made several phone calls with no help. Even shut my heat off for a week straight while I was out of town and it still went up.. Gouging?? I think SO!!!

I believe one approved rate increase a year should be enough. I do not believe the power company should have the right to raise it without
seeking the approval of the state.

Gas rates are outrageous.

I think that it is a shame that LGE would raise rate's during this recession.

It sucks! I keep my heat down all day and turn it down when I go to bed and my bill is still ridiculously high - I was gone and had the heat down all during christmas and it was still double what I paid the month before. Go figure! I would like to know why.

I don't understand why the cost of gas heated homes are rising when the cost of crude oil is decreasing. As usual someone is making big bucks off the backs of the middle class.

my bill is now a grand total of $500.00. Three of us live in a medium sized house and keep unessary lights off. We use energy effcient bulbs whe they are on. We even keep the house at a freezing 65 degrees.

How are we suppose to survive if they keep raising the rates when we couldn't even pay them before?

I have done everything possible to make my small home energy efficient and have noticed my LGE bill increase. I paid the higher price for the curly light bulbs, replaced bad windows, insulated the attic, unplug all rechargers as well as turning off the tv and computer at the surge protector. I laudry with cold water and keep the heat set at 68 degrees. I do not load up my refrigerator so that it struggles to keep up. anyway, I am really disgusted that LGE "EON" is making such a punitive move.

my bill went up over $100 in one month, with no increase in my thermostat. I keep my house at 66 in the day time and 68 when I am home and I am always freezing.

I live in a condo on the second floor. This past month when I seen my bill it really shocked me. My bill usually runs $65-$70 a month, this past month it was 107.00 That is crazy. I would understand the high bill if I lived in a house, but I live in a condo.
