(WHAS11) - A Kentucky animal shelter designed to save animals is now closed after dogs were found living in filth.

The pet sanctuary was started to save animals from being euthanized at local shelters.

The shelter is in Morgantown, jus south of Owensboro.  With 60 dogs in a small area, things got out of hand.

Their case sends out a message to others trying to save animals and to those giving them up.

“You have to be careful because anyone can start a sanctuary,” says Pamela Rogers of the Humane Society.

None of the animals in this case had to be put down but many were in very poor health.
