01:04 PM EDT on Thursday, March 27, 2008
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A University of Louisville official says a woman who walked into the student health services building with a gun was disarmed shortly afterward.
School spokeswoman Cindy Hess says university police arrived at the scene at 8:39 a.m. EDT, seven minutes after the call came in, and found a hostage situation. Hess says she doesn’t know how many people were taken hostage, but there were no injuries.
Hess says the woman was disarmed shortly after 9 a.m.
A message posted on the university’s main Web page read: “UPDATED 9:21 a.m.: The situation at Student Health on Belknap Campus is under control. The student is no longer armed. No injuries reported.”
Hess says she doesn’t know whether woman who had the gun is a student. Safety alerts sent out by the school said it was a student with a gun.
Hess says the university first issued safety alerts at 9:04 a.m. The alerts were sent to student phones, cell phones and posted on its Web site. She says the campus was not locked down.
The first alert said: “ALERT There is a student with a gun at the student health center. Please avoid this area. This is not a test.” The second alert reported the situation had been resolved without injuries.
Nikki Williams, a 20-year-old junior from Louisville, said she didn’t realize at first she got the message until friends also started reading their messages.
“It’s just kind of scary that anybody can be on campus,” she said.
