House Speaker still holding out hope on casinos

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- House Speaker Jody Richards is still holding out hope that lawmakers will approve a measure that could lead to the opening of casinos in Kentucky.
The Bowling Green Democrat said Wednesday the issue isn’t yet dead.
Gov. Steve Beshear said Wednesday he plans to talk with House leaders to decide “whether it’s time to say stop.”
Beshear has said allowing casinos to open and taxing them could help stave off a projected $900 million financial shortfall and severe cuts in government services.
Beshear wants lawmakers to approve a proposal to change the state’s constitution to allow casinos to open. Voters would get to ratify or reject the proposal in a ballot referendum.
The casino legislation is House Bill 550.
