WHAS11 Archive: 1993 implosion

Louisville, Ky. (WHAS11) - An event coming up in Louisville will surely be a crowd draw and a spectacle next month, early on a Saturday morning.

WHAS11 News has learned that’s when the vacated Humana building called Riverview Square will be imploded in downtown Louisville to make way for the new basketball arena.

The building at Third and Main Street is not very tall, standing at nine stories, but it will come down with explosives on Saturday morning at 7:00 a.m., July 19th.

The only thing that could delay it is if LG&E has problems with its substation switchover this weekend.

There have been four implosions in Louisville so far.  The one that drew the most attention was in October of 1993 as part of Humana’s waterfront expansion.

The old Belknap warehouse was imploded and used as the backdrop for the Sylvester Stallone-Wesley Snipes movie, Demolition Man.
