Renter's Insurance; don't rent a home without it

12:14 AM EDT on Tuesday, July 15, 2008

(WHAS11) - Investing in renter's insurance is a small price to pay if you ever need to use it.

Watch this story

We talked to one local family that lost everything in a fire, and while no one was hurt, they say it’s something they did look into but never thought they’d need.

Carl Snawders said, “I never thought this would happen, ever.”

Not much is left of the home Monica Snawders, her boyfriend Carl and their two children lived in.

Monica Snawders said, “I have nothing . . . nothing.”

The family rented a home and a week ago a fire ripped through,  ruining the home and everything in it.

Monica Snawders said, “When I got there, the house was nothing but a skeleton. Nothing was salvageable.”

Monica Snawders said, “I didn’t have renters insurance and I wish I would have now, but i didn’t ever think something like that would happen to me.”

Carl Snawders said, “I think renters insurance is the smartest thing anyone could have. We checked into it and it’s about 20-25$ a month.”

Monica and Carl said they thought about it but didn’t think they needed it.

Monica Snawders said, “It doesn’t cost very much money you might not think something could happen to you but it could and you’ll regret it.”

Carl Snawders said, “I’ve spent $20 getting soda pop at the store.”

Now they’re learning a lesson the hard way.

Carl Snawders said, “Everything we have is gone.  We didn’t have renters insurance which we regret now.”

Monica Snawders said, “The baby books pictures $50,000 or all the money in the world couldn’t replace that.”

For now Monica and her family are going to have to start from scratch.

Monica Snawders said, “I’ve got a house getting ready to move into but I have nothing to put in it.”

Carl Snawders said, “Our goal is to get her in there and little by little replace everything she’s lost.”

And as for rental insurance on the new house . . .

Carl Snawders said, “Without a doubt, almost automatic, for $20 a month you can ensure your family doesn’t have to go through what were going through.”

I looked into renter insurance and got quotes online tonight- based on your personal information rates ranged anywhere from ten to thirty dollars a month.
