TCA creates Eight Belles Memorial Fund
07:52 PM EDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
Thoroughbred Charities of America (TCA) has established the Eight Belles Memorial Fund to benefit retraining Thoroughbreds for secondary careers and research into catastrophic breakdowns.
The fund was created following Eight Belles catastrophic breakdown following her runner-up finish in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) on May 3 at Churchill Downs after galloping out.
“Many of the donations that have come in were actually cashed winning tickets that people didn’t want to spend on themselves,” TCA Executive Director Liz Harris said.
Following Eight Belles breakdown, TCA began receiving various donations with the request for funds to go toward charities to help Thoroughbreds like Eight Belles.
For more information or to make a donation to the Eight Belles Memorial Fund, call (859) 312-5531 or visit www.ThoroughbredCharities.org.
