Indiana boys All-Stars named for series against Kentucky

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Gordon Hayward and Julian Mavunga of Class 4A champion Brownsburg will join Mr. Basketball Tyler Zeller on the Indiana high school All-Star basketball team for the annual series against Kentucky.
The 7-foot Zeller, a North Carolina recruit who led the state in scoring and took Washington to the 3A title, was an automatic selection as Mr. Basketball. The rest of the 14-member team was announced by the sponsoring Indianapolis Star in Sunday’s editions.
“We have a lot of perimeter players because that’s where we felt the strength was in the group,” said All-Star coach Rick Baumgartner of Muncie South. “We also have a lot of versatility and a lot of depth, and we’re going to need depth because, including the two junior exhibitions, we will play four games in seven days.”
The All-Stars will play a team of junior stars June 9 in Zeller’s home gym in Washington and June 11 at Marion, the home gym of All-Star Julius Mays. Two nights later, they’ll face the Kentucky All-Stars at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and they’ll finish this year’s series June 15 at Louisville Gardens.
The 6-8 Hayward is one of three Butler recruits on the All-Star team, joining 6-7 Garrett Butcher of Edgewood and 6-4 Chase Stigall of New Castle. Two other All-Stars, 5-9 Larry Stone of Indianapolis Howe and 6-5 Alex Young of Indianapolis Northwest, will play at nearby IUPUI.
“This means everything,” said Stone, who averaged 22 points and eight assists as a senior and finished with a school-record 1,864 points. “Even though I had some early success, it wasn’t until I was a junior that I started believing that I am really good at this game. But it’s all come together.”
Others named to the team are Daniel Moore of Carmel, Walter Offutt of Warren Central, Randy Davis of Plymouth, Braydon Hobbs of New Albany, Kyle Kuric of Evansville Memorial and Zack Novak of Chesterton.
Zeller, Butcher, Novak and Mays were also first-team All-State selections by The Associated Press. Hobbs, Kuric, Davis, Mavunga and Hayward were second-team AP selections, and Stigall and Stone were third-team picks.
Offutt, an Ohio State recruit and an honorable-mention All-State pick, is not expected to play in the All-Star games because of a knee injury that ended his season in December.
