U of L students walk out in protest

09:44 PM EDT on Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Hundreds of University of Louisville students walked off campus this afternoon to protest higher education costs.  About 300 students walked out at 1:11PM this afternoon.

Tuition costs have already gone up 9% at U of L and they could escalate again with proposed budget cuts in Frankfort.

Students say they had to do something to bring attention to their cause.  A petition with more than 1,000 student signatures is also circulating on campus.  It asks the administration to send a message to Frankfort that they can’t afford any more hikes.

Across the country experts say college education has been spiraling higher and higher with some schools seeing double digit jumps in tuition.

It makes for hard times for students and their parents and today U of L students were saying they can’t stomach another hike.

The legislature has yet to set a budget, so schools like U of L don’t know yet how much more, or how much less, they’ll be getting in state support.  Once it learns that, U of L’s Board of Trustees will have to vote on  how much of a tuition increase students could face come fall.
