(WHAS11) - February marks American Heart Month and research shows more American women are dying from heart disease.
Cardiovascular disease kills one American woman every minute.
The National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute has begun something called ‘The Heart Truth’; a call to action for women to protect their heart health.
Christine Steiger says heart disease is one thing that she is all too familiar with.
"Four days after my 39th birthday I had a heart attack which was quite surprising because prior to that I was in the best shape of my life. I was exercising every day, running five miles a day and eating healthy," says Christine Steiger.
Christine takes medication daily, exercises, and continues to watch her diet.
Doctors say that's the best way to keep away from the effects of heart disease.
