(WHAS11) - The University of Louisville’s Psychiatric Department shed some light on the Fort Hood, Texas massacre.
Dr. David Walker is a former Air Force psychiatrist who worked at the same medical center as the alleged shooter, 39-year-old Major Nidal Hasan.
Major Hasan worked as a military psychiatrist and stands accused of Thursday’s mass shooting at Fort Hood.
Major Hasan once helped counsel numerous soldiers returning from war who suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
There were reports that Hasan feared being deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan.
Dr. Walker treats roughly 160,000 veterans in Kentuckiana. Walker also did similar work to Hasan’s as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force.
Walker says, “I'm a former Lt. Col. and psychiatrist in the Air Force. The Air Force, military and Army teaches us to deal with stress and handle individuals with stress. The question of what went wrong certainly one would like to see if it's because he was very ill, psychotic or had severe depression with psychosis."
Dr. Walker believes the military could possibly change their policy on who they hire in the Psychiatric Department. He adds that it’s too early to tell if this tragedy could’ve been prevented of if there were warning signs until experts talk to Major Hasan.
