(WHAS11)--A plan for downtown traffic around the new Louisville arena is set to be announced Tuesday.
Approximately 20,000 people will come and go to events at the new arena, with 70,000 people already working in the downtown area come rush hour time, it could potentially be a traffic nightmare.
The arena's board of director has been grappling with the traffic issue since the summer when local police, EMS and parking officials met to talk about how to handle the traffic and safety issues.
Parking officials said there will be ample parking, with more than 11,000 public and private spaces within three blocks of the arena. The LMPD Traffic Unit said it will employ extra officers and overtime for traffic and crown control.
"As much as we want everybody to park and get to and from there, they need to feel safe and secure. They need to know that we've thought about emergency access, inclement weather and accidents that cause delays. So we just want to be able to participate in that and make sure there are adequate communications," Doug Hamilton, director of Emergency Management, said.
The final traffic management plan will be unveiled at Tuesday morning's board meeting.
