(WHAS11) Those Christmas trees and lights may be festive, but they can also pose some serious dangers.
Before you hang those lights, do a quick check for things like frayed wires and broken bulbs. An exposed wire and a live tree don’t mix. You could end up with a fire in your living room.
Another safety tip; if you have to replace something, buy from a retailer you trust. Otherwise, you could end up with a potentially dangerous counterfeit.
Brett Brenner, Electrical Safety Foundation International, “The cord set that I’m holding for example, the counterfeiters have basically skimped on the wiring but they’ve also used flammable rubber coating.”
Another thing to watch out for; overloaded electrical outlets. You don’t want to plug your tree or lights into an outlet where you already have five or six other things plugged in.
Finally, turn off the lights before you go to bed or when you leave the house.
