Angry south Louisville residents spoke out Monday night at a community meeting about irritating odors that filled up to 50 homes last Monday.

Nuplex Resins Plant located near the airport said one of its water storage tanks overflowed releasing chemicals.

Nuplex makes raw materials that are used in paints.

South 1st street, a couple blocks from the Nuplex plant, is one of the streets that was effected by that chemical spill.  Monday night people who live there got answers on how the spill happened and whether they should be worried about their health.

“I'm here today to let you know we're apologizing for this incident. It was an accidental release,” said Mike Wright, Safety Manager of Nuplex Resins.

He apologized to the crowd of 50 plus people affected by last Mondays spill at the plant.

Wright says chemicals were released after one of the plant's water storage tanks overflowed causing a lot of these residents like Susan Stone to deal with an irritating odor for days.

Stone described it as, “Chemical smell like paint and when the furnace kicked on it smelled like someone sprayed spray paint in your house.”

Nuplex Resins makes raw materials used in industrial grade paints. The Environmental Protection Agency told people at the meeting that the agency performed air and water tests after the spill. They say the results were below the level to be concerned and that's when the meeting took a turn.

These people who live near the plant were clearly upset.

Nuplex says it is investigating its process and procedure related to the spill and has hired a 3rd party engineer to evaluate its containment design.

The residents WHAS11 talked to say the spill caused them to have burning eyes and throats.

The health department says it is possible to have a headache, nausea, or lightheadedness from the chemicals that spilled.
