LOUISVILLE, KY. (WHAS11)--A massive water main break at S. Floyd Street and Warnock Street has caused portions of the city to lose water. The Louisville Water Company says the break is in a major transmission main and is a 48 inch break. They have not said what caused the break. They say they are trying to shut that main off to allow water pressure in the area to rebuild.

It’s a scene you might expect to see on a river or lake, not a university campus; firefighters rescuing stranded families and pulling them across a flooded Floyd. St. to their cars in a U of L parking lot.

In 20 to 30 minutes the street was flooded, cars in jeopardy and many people were stuck on top of a parking garage

Louisville Water Co. President Greg Heitzman says it will still take some time to determine what caused this massive water main break.

The lack of water pressure caused by this break was a big concern to Louisville’s downtown hospitals, but officials say trouble was averted.

There is no estimate on when the main may be fixed or how long it will be out. Louisville Fire Department captain Salvador Melendez says fire department has backup water mains and have checked the hydrants in the area, which they say have adequate water pressure.

There were several hundred campers and students on the U of L campus when the water main break took place. We’re told programs at U of L are scheduled to continue tomorrow as planned.
