A man who called Louisville Police for help ended up needing help from doctors in the ER. A Portland man had his house burglarized Saturday night, and when police showed-up one officer shot the homeowner.

Now that man is speaking out to WHAS11’s Chase Cain.

The man is recovering, out of the hospital, because the bullet only grazed his side. He just doesn't understand how this happened. He saw the patrol car pull up, went outside to get their help, and wound up on his front porch bleeding.

"I'm scared," Enrique told us with his girlfriend by his side. Both hid their faces from our camera because just hours earlier Enrique took a bullet, not from a criminal, but from Metro Police at his own house.

It happened Saturday night after someone broke-in, stealing electronics and cash from his house on St. Xavier in Portland.

Enrique says, "I called the police and told them my house just got invaded; they robbed my house. And she asked me was they still there and I said no."

Enrique says when officers showed up he rushed out screaming for help, "when I was coming out of my house, I said, my house just got robbed. As soon as I said that- then and there he shot me, for no reason. I had no mask on. I had no gloves on, no black. I had on all green. So I don't see how he could mistake me for a robber."

But the officer who opened fire said Enrique provoked him.

"The individual continued to be irate. The officer had a difficult time understanding him. At one point, the individual raised his hands, still approaching the officer with what appeared to be a shiny object. The officer fired one shot," LMPD Chief Robert White told us.

The bullet only grazed Enrique’s side, but he says the officer's story just isn't true, "myself and witnesses saw what he did and heard me speak. And he didn't say nothing as he was approaching my yard. I walked to the door, no coat, no phone, nothing in my hand."

Enrique continued, "it's just disappointing that somebody can shoot you and you're just letting them know that it's your house."

Metro Police immediately put the officer involved on paid administrative leave which is standard practice in a situation like this. Chief White says they will investigate what happened.

Enrique hopes they discover the truth and take action to keep anyone else from having to fear the police when they call 911.
