(WHAS11) - The search for a dangerous black bear in Red River Gorge continues after a hiker was attacked on Sunday.
Some 40,000 acres of campgrounds and trails are closed until the bear is caught.
At the entrance to one campsite at Red River Gorge, warning signs and road blocks are everywhere. Fish and Wildlife officials are searching the trails and woods and even laying bear traps.
Word that officials closed the Red River Geographical Area and Clifty Wilderness areas on the heels of the Fourth of July holiday shocked many campers eager to enjoy the outdoors.
WHAS11’s Claudia Coffey was outside one of the main campsites where she saw numerous campers turned away.
While black bears are common in the Daniel Boone National Forest, bear attacks are not. A hiker was attacked while walking a trail on Sunday.
He survived but has 50 to 60 stitches on both legs.
The bear has been spotted twice since Sunday and officials feel they are closing in.
