(WHAS11) -- Parents and educators are going to Frankfort Tuesday to voice their opinions about a bill that would allow charter schools in the state.

Monday night parents and concerned citizens met at Quinn Chapel AME Church to learn more about charter schools. Many of those parents are planning to go to Frankfort with the Black Alliance for Educational Options, to show their support for charter schools at a public hearing.

Charter schools use federal and state money, but they operate like private schools. It’s been a divisive issue in Kentucky.

Brent McKim, the president for the Jefferson County Teacher’s Association says the schools are held accountable by being closed if they aren’t successful.

“But I don’t think parents want schools closed on their kids,” McKim said. “I think they want to help our public schools get better.”

One charter school supporter said he thought charters schools could offer more to his child.

“I believe that charter schools hold that type of love and caring, and they will pay more attention to my daughter,” Luther Brown said. Brown plans to go to Frankfort with his daughter to talk to lawmakers about the issue.

The public hearing starts at 8 a.m. in the Capitol Annex.
