(WHAS11) Move over, tea party! There’s another grassroots political movement in town.
They say they are frustrated by government too.
They are democrats. They are republicans.
They are young and old; concerned citizens, even politicians, of different races and genders, with a lot of different ideas.
“I’m tired of the hate and I’m tired of the fear that it spreads...” said one member.
But they agree on one thing; what is happening in government now, simply isn’t working.
Wyndee Holbrook, of Berea, Ky. said, “The momentum that has just been ground out of us, because of all the inertia that is DC at this point.”
It’s called the Coffee Party; a play on the popular Tea Party movement and similar in that the goal is change.
But its approach is different. And it all began on the internet.
Dave Branthoover, local group founder said, “It started with Annabelle Park ranting on Facebook. Others started ranting with her about how they aren’t doing anything in Washington, that they’re just bucking heads.”
“Join the Coffee Party” has nearly 130,000 fans on its Facebook page today.
The official “Coffee Party” website declared Saturday, March 11, National Coffee Party Day and is encouraging local communities to organize their own coffee get-together.
In Louisville, about 40 people showed up.
Matthew Cooper, of Louisville, “I think in 50 years... what’s happening right now is going to be in the history books, because this is a chance for ordinary folks to get a voice again.”
This same scene is happening in coffee shops across America. More than 300 groups are meeting. This group is even talking of splitting up into smaller groups to spread their message
Holbrook said, “… isn’t just a Facebook thing. This is real people standing up face-to-face, coming together to say let’s make a difference. Let’s make a change.”
