Police were on a manhunt Tuesday night for a murderer.

Officers were so close to the killing, they heard the gunshots.

It happened around 7:30 p.m. near 22nd and Portland Avenue in the Portland neighborhood in west Louisville.

Linda Ashby told WHAS11 that, "He had somebody pulled over that ran a stop sign right out in front of my house and he was detaining the gentleman and all of a sudden, the detectives took off and we heard all of the sirens and everything and kind of made a u turn in the middle of the street and squealed tires and came down this way."

When the first division officers who heard the shots got to the scene they found a black male, possibly in his early 20s, lying in this alley.

"This body was discovered in an alley just behind 22nd and Portland. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, we believe of gunshot wounds," said Alicia Smiley of LMPD.

Police immediately began searching for suspects by LMPD helicopter, by combing through parks and by sending out K9 units as neighbors and others in the area waited to find out what happened.

"The house that's in the alley when it actually happened is where my grandson hangs out with his friends and everything so I was just really concerned," said Ashby.

Police have not named any suspects or released the identity of the man who was killed.

WHAS11 is investigating this story and will update with more information as it becomes available.
