LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- A judge has ordered former state Rep. Steve Nunn to undergo a mental evaluation after his attorney raised concerns about the ex-legislator's ability to assist in his own defense.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reported that Fayette Circuit Judge Pamela Goodwine on Friday ordered the evaluation to take place as soon as possible.
The 57-year-old Nunn is accused of killing his former fiancee, 29-year-old Amanda Ross. Ross was shot to death Sept. 11 outside her home in downtown Lexington. Nunn has pleaded not guilty to murder and violating an emergency protective order.
Nunn's lawyer, Warren Scoville, filed a motion earlier in the week saying Nunn's physical and mental health had declined to the point where he appeared unable to assist in his own defense.
