CHARLESTOWN, Ind. (WHAS11) -- Some residents in Charlestown, Ind. are dealing with brown drinking water.

Kasey Dunn has lived in Charlestown her entire life. The water was running clear when the WHAS11 cameras were there, but she said she never knows what to expect.

“It’s been an ongoing issue,” Dunn said. “But in the last year to two years it has really gotten bad.”
Dunn isn’t alone; several people have contacted WHAS11 news and shared pictures with us of similar problems.

“In the commodes and sinks, you have to stay on top of it all the time,” Dawn Meyer, another Charlestown resident, said.

She moved from Chicago to Charlestown four years ago and after seeing the water, she spent nearly $200 on a filtration system for her home.

WHAS11 news spoke with the Director of Utilities for the city. He said the discoloration is caused by build-up that breaks loose in the lines. While it looks unpleasant, he said it is safe to drink.

The Utility Director also said starting in February they will start adding a chemical to the water that will help clean out the pipes. There will be a public meeting at Town Hall at 6:30 p.m. to discuss what’s going on, and to answer any questions.
