Taylorsville, Ky. (WHAS11) - There is an outcry of support between the Rigsby family and Darrell Girdley, who lost his cousin in a terrible crash.
Two juniors from Spencer County High School died Wednesday afternoon.
Mikie Monroe, 16, and 17-year-old Shelby Bockting were thrown from a pickup on Mike Brown Road in Taylorsville after they lost control.
"The family is extremely devastated. We have a strong family. Shelby was like a light switch when she walked in the room. She smiles all the time," said Darrell Girdley, Shelby's cousin.
A steep curve on Mike Brown Road in Taylorsville is where Bockting and Monroe lost their lives after the Ford pickup rolled over into a ditch. But that's not how friends and family want them remembered.
Jenna Rigsby, 16, survived the accident and is being treated at Kosair Children's Hospital.
She was best friends with Shelby.
All three student athletes were on the softball team.
Jenna’s mother, Kelly, said things are tough, to say the least.
"Shelby was her best friend; they had lunch together in the cafeteria yesterday. They share a locker together. She's been a big part of our lives the last couple of years. She was a daughter to me," said Kelly Bolton Rigsby, Jenna’s mother.
Loved by students and staff, Spencer County High School is quieter than normal.
Their flag was lowered outside to remember the girls. Grief counselors were inside to help them mourn.
Monroe, Bockting and Rigsby's Facebook pages, flooded with these messages of support.
"The two young ladies who passed were well liked, good students, fun and energetic. It's a terrible loss to teachers who had them in class," said Spencer County High School Principal Curt Haun.
Jenna Rigsby told her mother that the girls were not texting and were paying attention to the road. Kentucky State Police say they were not wearing seat belts and are still investigating the cause of the crash.
