“We have focused our efforts on vaccinating the high risk groups,” said Dr. Adewale Troutman, Public Health & Wellness Director. “The vaccine supply issues seem to have been smoothed out and we feel it’s now time to offer the vaccine to anyone in the community who wants it.”
Children age nine and younger who have received their first H1N1 immunization will be able to get the booster at these clinics. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. People can help to alleviate clinic waiting time by downloading Vaccine Information Statements and consent forms at www.louisvilleky.gov/health and by filling the forms out ahead of time and bringing them to the clinic. People are also urged to wear either a short sleeved or sleeveless shirt – something that gives nurses quick and easy access to the arm.
Metro Public Health and Wellness is also making H1N1 vaccine for the general public available at all Family Health Center sites. Family Health Center Portland is also operating walk-in H1N1 clinics beginning today on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Public Health and Wellness has also made H1N1 vaccine available to a number of stores in the area such as Walmart, K-Mart, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and Meijer. These stores may charge an administrative fee for the vaccine. A list of these stores along with the administrative fee each of them charges is posted on our website at www.louisvilleky.gov/health
The department recently ended an intensive effort to vaccinate public, parochial and private school children. Nearly 50,000 children were vaccinated over a three week period by holding clinics in ten schools a day for three weeks. Nurses from Public Health and Wellness, Jefferson County Public Schools and Norton Healthcare administered the immunizations.
Metro Public Health and Wellness has also immunized more than 22,000 children and adults at public H1N1 clinics held in November at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, at the Urban Government Center and at New Zion Baptist Church. It has also distributed more than 122,000 doses to 296 hospitals and health care providers throughout the community.
