(WHAS11) -- Oldham County Sheriff's Deputies are hoping you can help them identify a man who impersonated a doctor in order to steal valuables from a hospital locker room.
The theft happened last Friday afternoon.
The suspect walked into the front of the hospital and worked his way into a surgery locker room, where authorities say he changed into medical scrubs, and then began looking for valuables.
Authorities say the suspect is a cool, calm collected con man, who walked into Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange, changed into medical scrubs, then managed to sneak into an employees-only surgical locker room.
"He noticed that there was a locker without a lock on it, opened it up. There was some clothing in it, so he reached into a pocket and took out $20," Baptist Hospital Northeast President Chris Roty said.
Roty says other employees spotted him and reported him.
"They knew he did not work here. So, they recognized a suspicious situation and got the right authorities involved," Roty said.
As the employees followed him, the man ran out of the building, got into a black SUV and drove away.
Deputies investigating the crime suspect it wasn't the first time the man has used brazen tactics to try to blend into a workplace and steal.
"These cons, either local, or from out of state, every year, about this time, will prey on people's good nature. Assuming, they're confident, they're where I am, they probably belong here. It’s not always the case," said Deputy Michael Meece of the Oldham County Sheriff's Office.
Criminologists sometimes call that the "the clipboard effect," when suspects try hard to look and act like they belong.
Some recent examples include a man who pretended to be a custodian in several office buildings and hotels in downtown Louisville, taking money, credit cards and checks from purses left under desks.
Just last year, two men allegedly gained access to the sidelines at University of Louisville football game by dressing as security guards, complete with loaded handguns.
And who can forget the Salahis? They're the couple that managed to dress and talk their way into a White House State Dinner.
The incident eventually led to Congressional hearings.
Baptist Northeast officials hope it will be a lesson for people in all workplaces.
"I think the big thing is making people aware of their surroundings," said Roty.
If you think you know the identity of the suspect involved in the theft, you're urged to contact the Oldham County Sheriff's Office at (502) 222-0111.
