(WHAS11) - A new year means new laws across the nation.

In California, restaurants are now restricted from using trans fats in meals in an effort to make food healthier.

Trans fats contribute to increased levels of bad cholesterol as well as increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Restaurants can no longer use oil, shortening or margarine containing trans fats to prepare food under the new law.

Bakeries will have an extra year to comply presumably because it will take more time for them to maintain the same texture and taste of some baked goods.
